When is the right time to begin?
- when they can already walk and sit on their own
-they tell you with words, or show you when they want to do a poo or a wee
-they start to be independent, and manage to do small tasks
-they begin to pull off their nappies after a poo or wee
-they can follow simple instructions like ‘bring me the ball’, they understand you better

What to do?
-take them with you to the toilet, show and explain what you are doing
-put their wet nappy in the potty and explain that wee goes inside
-stay at home and try to put them on the potty 30 minutes after each feeding
-you can give them more water than usual and try to put them on the potty every 30 minutes
-give them a reward or praise them if they sit there, even if it is just for a short period of time
Practice and practice. Take small steps at first, and make sure you don’t force them if they don’t want to sit down. If they don’t like sitting there, just give them some time and try again a few days later.
